WHAT IS DEPRESSION?
Depression is a common and serious mental health condition that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think, and how you act. It is characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed, and can interfere with daily functioning. Depression can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background.
Symptoms of Depression
Depression symptoms can vary from mild to severe and may include:
- Emotional Symptoms of depression
- Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood.
- Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism.
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness.
- Irritability or frustration, even over small matters.
- Physical Symptoms of depression
- Decreased energy or fatigue.
- Changes in appetite and weight (either loss or gain).
- Difficulty sleeping (insomnia) or oversleeping.
- Physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and pain.
- Cognitive Symptoms of depression
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions.
- Thoughts of death or suicide, or suicide attempts.
- Behavioral Symptoms of depression
- Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities.
- Withdrawal from social interactions.
- Increased use of alcohol or drugs.
