2. Excerpt from Blossoms of the Savannah.
- Place the excerpt in its immediate context. (4 marks)
Before the excerpt, Mama Milanoi, Taiyo and Resian are in the kitchen when Taiyo approaches the father and strikes a conversation with him, asking him whether he was comfortable and whether he needed anything. She also broaches the subject on Oloisudori but quickly realizes the father’s disinterest. As she leaves, the father sends her to call Resian.
After the excerpt, Ole Kaelo becomes agitated and fails to tell Resian what he had intended but instead sends Resian to call the mother. The tone of his voice is angry. He promises to tell Resian what he wanted some other time.
- What is so ironical in this passage. Explain with reference to elsewhere in the novel. (3marks)
It is ironical that Ole Kaelo tells Resian that her future is very important to him, seemingly caring about Resian but in truth, he only cares about his business deals with Oloisudori and that is why he would want to marry off Resian to secure his business.

It is ironical that Ole Kaelo in this excerpt comes out as pleasant; speaking kindly to Resian yet the truth in the text is that Ole Kaelo dislikes/loathes Resian and has never been kind to her/ It is ironical that Ole Kaelo wanted to have a pleasant conversation with Resian yet he dislikes her.

- “Your future is very important to me, my dear child” From elsewhere in the novel, explain why Ole Kaelo tells his daughter so. (3marks)
Ole Kaelo tells the daughter that her future is important to him since he had gotten into a business deal with Oloisudori who instead of asking for his money back, demands for Resian as a wife. This would be the only way that Ole Kaelo’s business with Oloisudori would be sustainable and that is why he tells the daughter that her future is important to him.

Resian is optimistic/ hopeful. She believes that Taiyo or the mother has talked to the father about allowing her enroll at the Egerton University. “Who between them spoke to you about our enrolment at the Egerton University?”

Education has been addressed in the excerpt. Resian speaks to the father anxious to know who between Taiyo and the mother had spoken to Ole Kaelo about her admission to Egerton University. “Who between them spoke to you about our enrolment at the Egerton University”
Determination is also a theme that has been highlighted in the excerpt. Resian is so determined to join Egerton University that she thinks the father is about to break this good news to her.

- There is Dialogue as an aspect of style in the excerpt. The dialogue between Resian and her father ole Kaelo as he wanted to disclose his plans for Resian.
“Yes, Papaai,” Resian said apprehensively. “I am here. Taiyo tells me you are calling me?”
“Yes, yes,” her father replied. “Please take a seat.” This dialogue reveals the strained relationship between father and daughter/ brings out Resian as an impatient character/ brings out Ole Kaleo as a temperamental character.
- Hyperbole has also been used in the excerpt. Ole Kaelo asks the daughter why she should be sitting a mile away from him. This indicates that Resian is afraid/apprehensive about getting close to the father. “Why do you sit a mile away? Come nearer.”
- There is the use vernacular language. Papaai is a vernacular word used in the excerpt with reference to Ole Kaelo by Resian. It shows Resian as a respectful character. (Culture/ Setting) (any one well illustrated and explained theme @ 2 marks)

3. Poetry
a) The poem is about a bird that is caged, it is confined and denied freedom hence it cannot enjoy the ordinary pleasures of nature such as the sunshine, the breeze and the perfume from flowers. The caged bird struggles to liberate itself but hurts itself in the process (any 3 points)
b)
- The first stanza talks about alienation (confinement), the caged bird is alienated from all that is natural and desirable, and this makes the bird to long for the days when it enjoyed freedom.
- The second stanza talks about struggle to free itself and how painful it is and any efforts to escape are met with brutality.
- The third stanza is a prayer. All other means having failed to yield results. The caged bird prays for intervention from a superior being to free it. ( any 3 points)
c) The persona has a sympathetic attitude towards the caged bird. Alas expresses pity, graphic description of the birds feeling elicits pity from the reader
The persona also empathizes with the caged bird. He keeps saying “I know what caged birds put himself /herself in the shoes of the bird

d) There is a theme of oppression/physical pain/ suffering, “the caged bird in an attempt to free itself, beats its wings until its blood is red on the cruel bars / the caged bird’s wing is bruised and his bosom sore.”
Another theme(s) is detention/imprisonment/ confinement/ denial of freedom, “I know what the caged feels…” the bird is caged and therefore not free to move/fly around freely.
e) There is a simile, “The river flows like a stream of glasses” this shows what the bird yearns for freedom but cannot have it, the river represents a life of freedom, stands for natural beauty that the caged bird is denied.
There is repetition of the line, “I know why the caged bird sings”, and this repetition brings out the persona’s empathetic nature.
Symbolism is also evident; the cage symbolizes confinement and denial of basic rights such as freedom of movement.
There is assonance, “…and a pain still throbs in the old, old scars.” To emphasize the theme of pain and suffering.
There is an aspect of alliteration, “…when the wind stirs soft through the springing grass” this alliteration brings out nature’s pleasures the caged bird has been denied because of being locked in a cage. /“…when he beats his bars and he would be free” this shows the caged bird’s determination to free itself from the cage and the pain it goes through in the process.
f)
i) The line “And the faint perfume from its petals steals” means that the flowers produce a sweet scent that gives much joy but the caged bird cannot access such pleasure since it is locked up in a cage unlike other birds out there that freely enjoy the sweet scent. (1mark)
ii) The line “And they pulse again with a keener sting” means that the pains and throbs come back even more painful. (1mark)
