1. Imagine you are the secretary of the Debate Club in your school, recently the club held a meeting and the following issues were discussed;
- Election of new officials
- Income generating activities for the club
- Preparation for the Great Debaters’ Contest.
In the meeting, 8 members were present, 3 members including the vice chairperson sent apologies and the whereabouts of 2 members was unknown. The club patron also attended the meeting. Apart from the main issues, two issues arose from the previous meeting. Write down the minutes of the meeting. (20 marks)

I would say the line with a falling intonation while opening my eyes widely /spread my hands out to show I am asking a question.

- I would rehearse my points in front of a mirror/ mock audience.

d) i. Identify and explain three strengths in Annette’s conversational skills. (6marks)
- Annette starts by greeting Brenda. “Good morning Brenda. How are you fairing on with your studies? ”
- Annette empathizes with Brenda on her poor grades, “I know it is a great disappointment to score a grade below what you expected in the pre-mocks and I sympathize with you but you must not allow it to make you so unhappy.”
- Annette leans forward to attentively listen to Brenda without interrupting her unnecessarily. “(Leaning forward) I know, but you must pull yourself together…”
- Annette helps Brenda understand why she is not doing well academically and encourages her to do well. “Now why do you think you failed? / I am sure you will do well in the mocks and National Exams.”

ii) Although interrupting a speaker is often considered impolite, there are times when such interruption would be welcome. Cite three such instances. (3 marks)
- Interruption would be welcome when a speaker has given incorrect details on a well-known fact.
- It would be welcome to interrupt a speaker when seeking clarification on an issue from the speaker.
- It would be welcome to interrupt a speaker when you strongly agree with a speaker.
- When one wishes to provide additional information, it would be welcome to interrupt the speaker.
- It would also be welcome to interrupt the speaker if he/she veers off / digresses from the topic of discussion. (Any 3 relevant points @ 1 mark)
