CAUSES OF DEPRESSION
Depression is believed to be caused by a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors:
- Genetics: Depression can run in families, indicating a genetic predisposition.
- Biological Differences: People with depression often have physical changes in their brains. The significance of these changes is still uncertain but may help pinpoint causes.
- Brain Chemistry: Imbalances in brain chemicals called neurotransmitters are thought to play a significant role in depression.
- Hormones: Changes in the body’s balance of hormones may trigger depression. Hormone changes can result from thyroid problems, menopause, or other conditions.
- Life Events: Traumatic events, such as the loss of a loved one, financial problems, or a high-stress environment, can trigger depression.
- Medical Conditions: Chronic illnesses, certain medications, and substance abuse can increase the risk of developing depression.
